The Austin Side of the County Line
North Austin backyards are a mix. Wells Branch, Milwood, Anderson Mill, Balcones Woods and Scofield Farms are 1980s and 1990s neighborhoods with mature trees, established yards and covers that are often due for replacement. Harris Branch, Tech Ridge and the newer developments off Parmer are more like Round Rock: two-story homes, small slabs, HOA review.
The City of Austin’s permitting is its own process, with impervious cover limits that surrounding cities don’t have, and timelines that run longer. We work in it regularly. Older North Austin neighborhoods without HOAs give more design freedom; newer ones have architectural committees like the rest of the metro.
Both kinds of yard share the afternoon sun. We look at orientation first, then design the cover, screens and lighting to how you’ll use the space.

Learn morePermits and HOA Approval in North Austin
Every attached cover here needs a permit and most neighborhoods need HOA approval. We handle both.
The City of Austin requires a building permit for attached patio covers and most freestanding structures, with engineering, and applies impervious cover limits that can affect new slabs. Neighborhoods with HOAs require architectural approval; many older North Austin neighborhoods have none.
We check your lot’s impervious cover limit before designing, prepare drawings and engineering, handle the HOA submission where applicable and pull the Austin permit. Austin’s timeline runs longer than the surrounding cities; we tell you what to expect.
- Drawings and engineering prepared for your HOA and the city
- We submit, follow up and pull the permit
- Designed to match your home so approval is straightforward
- Fully insured, since 2012

North Austin Patio Cover FAQ
How far is North Austin from your shop?
About twenty minutes down I-35 or Mopac. We work north of 183 most weeks.
What’s different about permits in Austin?
Impervious cover limits and longer review times. We check the limit before designing and build the timeline into the plan.
My neighborhood has no HOA. Does that change anything?
More design freedom, and one fewer approval step. The city permit still applies.
Can you replace a 1990s wood cover?
Yes. We assess it first; many are repairable, others are better replaced with insulated aluminum on the same slab.
Do you cover Austin south of 183?
Our focus is north of 183 from the Round Rock shop. For central and south Austin, our sister company A1 Austin Patio Covers serves those areas.
