Round Rock backyards have a common layout: a two-story wall, a small slab, a west-facing exposure and no mature trees. Pergolas are the structure homeowners here most often regret, because they expected shade and got stripes. Here’s how to choose between a pergola, a solid cover and a louvered roof.
Start with which way the patio faces
The afternoon sun is the problem. A west-facing patio gets direct sun from roughly 2 p.m. until sunset for six months; south-facing gets it midday. East- and north-facing patios are shaded by afternoon and need much less help. In the newer Round Rock subdivisions, lots face every direction, so check yours before choosing anything.
- West or south facing: you need real shade. Solid cover or louvered roof.
- East or north facing: a pergola may be all you need.
- Pool decks and gardens: often a pergola, where light is the point.
What a pergola does
Rafters a few inches apart block a portion of direct sun, shifting through the day, and no rain. Tighter spacing or a lattice top increases shade. A retractable canopy adds adjustable shade and light rain protection. On a west-facing Round Rock patio at 5 p.m. in August, a pergola alone will not make the space comfortable.
What a solid cover does
An insulated aluminum or roofed wood cover blocks all direct sun and rain, and the space beneath can be screened, fanned and lit into a true outdoor room. It’s what makes a west patio usable. The trade-off: it blocks winter sun too and makes the adjacent rooms a bit darker.
What a louvered roof does
Motorized louvers open for sun, angle for shade and close for rain. It’s the one structure that solves the west-patio problem in summer and still lets in January sun, priced as the premium option.
The combination answer
Many of the best Williamson County backyards use two: a solid cover over dining and seating by the house, and a pergola over the grill zone or by the pool. Designing both at once keeps proportions right and cost down.
Quick guide
- West-facing, want summer use: solid cover.
- West-facing, want summer shade and winter sun: louvered roof.
- East- or north-facing, want structure and light: pergola.
- Bugs are the real problem: any solid roof plus screens.
