Aluminum vs. Wood Patio Covers for Williamson County Homes

By A1 Round Rock Patio Covers

It’s the first question at almost every consultation in Round Rock, and both answers are right for different houses and different owners. Here’s how insulated aluminum and cedar compare on what matters in Williamson County.

Temperature under the cover

Insulated aluminum wins clearly. The foam core stops the roof from radiating heat down. A shingled wood roof absorbs heat all afternoon and releases it under the cover into the evening. Bare, non-insulated aluminum is worst of all; it heats like a car hood. On the west-facing patios common in Teravista, Forest Creek and Paloma Lake, this is the deciding factor for most homeowners.

Maintenance

Aluminum: rinse it occasionally; the finish is baked on and warranted for life. Wood: re-stain every two to four years in the Central Texas sun and keep an eye on the flashing at the house. A maintained cedar cover lasts decades. An unmaintained one shows it within five years.

Looks

Wood wins for warmth and for matching certain homes: the limestone-and-cedar houses near Old Town, the ranches off Sam Bass, the craftsman-style homes in older Round Rock. Insulated aluminum in an embossed wood-grain finish, paired with stone or stucco columns, is convincing from the street; up close, cedar is cedar. Many customers choose the hybrid: cedar posts and beams with an insulated aluminum roof.

HOA approval

Both get approved when the design matches the house. The newer Round Rock associations tend to prefer low-maintenance materials; a few older neighborhoods lean toward wood. We know most of them and design for approval either way.

Cost

Aluminum is usually less for a solid-roof cover of the same size, sometimes by half. Add wood’s re-staining over ten years to the comparison. See our Williamson County cost guide.

Hail

Williamson County gets hit most springs. Aluminum panels take hail well; large stones can dent the top skin cosmetically, out of sight from below. Shingled wood covers take hail like your house roof does and may need the same repairs.

Fans, lights and screens

Both handle them. Aluminum panels let us run wiring inside the roof and mount fans directly. Wood covers carry fans on beams and hide wiring in framing. Screens attach to either.

Our recommendation for Round Rock

For most two-story homes with a west-facing patio and a household that doesn’t want a maintenance schedule: insulated aluminum, in a wood-grain finish if the house calls for warmth. For homes where the architecture demands real timber and the owners will keep it stained: cedar, built with proper flashing and a real roof. For the look of wood with the maintenance of aluminum: the hybrid.
